Translation Requirements

If you're submitting documents to a UK court and they’re not in English, you’ll need a certified translation. HM Courts & Tribunals Service requires that all non-English documents be translated into English and accompanied by a signed and dated Statement of Truth from the translator.

What Is a Statement of Truth?

A Statement of Truth is a formal declaration confirming that the contents of a document are true to the best of the signatory’s knowledge and belief. In UK court proceedings, this statement is required when submitting certified translations of non-English documents. It ensures the translation meets the evidentiary standards set by HM Courts & Tribunals Service.

For translations, the Statement of Truth must be signed and dated by the translator and typically includes wording such as:

"I hereby certify that I have personally carried out this translation, and I certify that it is to the best of my knowledge and belief, a true and accurate translation from [language] to English. I believe that the facts stated in this statement are true. I understand that proceedings for contempt of court may be brought against anyone who makes or causes to be made, a false statement in a document verified by a statement of truth without an honest belief in its truth."

Common Documents That Often Require Translation

Based on our experience, clients often need certified translations of these documents as part of their legal proceedings:
