Certified Translation of Divorce Certificates
A divorce certificate is often required when giving notice to marry, changing your surname on official documents, or presenting evidence in family court. In the UK, if the certificate is issued in a language other than English or Welsh, it must be translated and certified to be accepted by official bodies.
This process, known as a certified translation, is completed by a professional translator and includes a signed statement confirming that the translation is accurate and complete. The statement is usually issued on the translator’s official letterhead, with the title Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
Government departments such as UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), HM Passport Office, DVLA, and local marriage registrars rely on certified translations of divorce certificates to process applications and confirm marital status changes.
Divorce Certificate Translation for Remarriage
If you plan to remarry in England or Wales, you must bring original documents to your notice of marriage appointment. This includes a court stamped decree absolute or final divorce order if you were previously divorced. Where the divorce was granted abroad, marriage registrars require a certified English translation.
Government guidance is clear: “...you’ll need to bring the original document plus a full translation… certified at the bottom of the document by the translator.” The translation must also include the translator’s name, address, telephone number, and signature.
The government further requires evidence of any name changes. If your name has changed since your last marriage, or if you have ever been known by another name, you must provide proof such as a marriage certificate, deed poll, or statutory declaration. If any of these documents are not in English, they must also be accompanied by a certified translation.
